Russia Under Putin Is an Example of Self-Defeat

By Paul Craig Roberts
PaulCraigRoberts.org

August 29, 2026

Since 2014, I have been puzzled by the absence of a Russian foreign policy strategy. The Kremlin had the carrot-diplomacy-but no stick, the absence of which made the diplomacy ineffective. If the diplomacy failed, there was no backup plan.

We saw this in 2014 when Washington overthrew without Russian opposition the Russian-friendly government in Ukraine and installed an anti-Russian puppet government.

Hoping for Smooth Sailing With the Sea Gulls and Thoreau

By Edward Curtin

August 29, 2026

Here where I sit once again looking easterly to the vast sea, the wind and the waves and winding vistas along the north Atlantic coast drown out trivial thoughts. We are here for a few days to empty our minds of trash, as a vacation should so vacate. Unlike many, we are lucky for this opportunity.

Yesterday, while walking down the far deserted beach, we saw a dark mountainous form high up on a sand dune that perplexed us from a distance.

Why Not Just Admit It ? The Welfare-Warfare State Has Failed.

By Jacob G. Hornberger
The Future of Freedom Foundation

August 29, 2026

Why not just admit the obvious: The welfare-warfare state that 20th-century Americans brought into existence and that 21st-century Americans have kept in existence has failed. Wouldn't that be a lot better than to waste time, energy, and money coming up with ways to save and reform it ? After all, if several generations of Americans haven't been able to make this deadly, destructive, immoral, and dysfunctional system work, what are the chances that people living today will make it work ? No chance at all!

Marcus Licinius Trump

By Derek WHEELER

Even the richest man in Rome was relegated to the shadows of his contemporaries. Before allying with Pompey and Caeser to form the First Triumvirate, Marcus Licinius Crassus amassed his wealth through shady real estate deals.

Often bargaining for pennies on the dollar (or asses on the sestertius), victims of house fires were presented with the choice to sell quickly or watch their future go up in flames.

Trump Pushes for Another $5 Trillion Debt-ceiling Increase

By Veronika Kyrylenko
The New American

August 28, 2026

Washington has a disastrous debt problem. And yet, President Donald Trump wants more room to borrow.

According to The Hill, Trump is pushing to extend the federal debt ceiling through the end of his presidency. That would require roughly another $5 trillion in borrowing authority.

The contrast with his old promises is striking.

When running for president in 2016, Trump said he could wipe out the entire $19 trillion national debt within eight years.

More military murders on the high seas

by Jacob G. HORNBERGER

The U.S. military has just announced that it has carried out two more murders on the high seas near South America. This now brings the military's high-seas murders to more than 200 people.

Mind you, in its announcement, the military did not use the term "murder." The announcement stated that the military is simply enforcing the U.S. drug war. But make no mistake about it: What the military is doing is engaging in state-sponsored murder, which is ordinarily a felony offense.

Twilight's Last Gleaming

By Andrew P. Napolitano

August 27, 2026

There is a point in the decline of republics when the problem is no longer that government breaks its own laws. Governments will always behave unlawfully. The deeper problem comes when the constitutional machinery designed to prevent those acts stops functioning - when spending becomes detached from arithmetic, presidential power becomes detached from law, and Congress and the courts become detached from the Constitution.

Rothbard vs. the Conservatives on the American and French Revolutions

By Ryan McMaken
Mises.org

August 27, 2026

Contained within Rothbard's multi-volume history of the American Revolution, Conceived in Liberty, is an extended argument against the conservative narrative on the American Revolution and the French Revolution.

Writing in the 1960s, Rothbard was addressing what was then a common claim among conservatives about the revolution: that it was a conservative, restrained, and almost gentlemanly revolution that sought only to preserve and restore what had already been established.

The Disappearing Western World

By Paul Craig Roberts
PaulCraigRoberts.org

August 27, 2026

It was 53 years ago that Jean Raspail wrote The Camp of the Saints in an attempt to wake up the French nation to the future challenge they would face. The French response was to dismiss Raspail's effort as a dystopian novel and do nothing. Today five decades later Marine Le Pen, leader of France's only French nationalist party, is the most popular political leader in France.

The « Smartening » of America

By Cherie Zaslawsky
CherieZaslawsky.substack.com

August 27, 2026

The formerly sleepy suburb of  Menlo Park where I live, made a sudden appearance on everyone's radar in 2011 when Facebook moved in. Then-Mayor Rich Cline presciently called it: "the single biggest event in our town's history." And we're about to make national headlines once more, since we're facing what amounts to a hostile takeover by progressive change agents, through a perfect storm of political chicanery coupled with undue influence by big monied interests.
