Desertions increase in Ukraine

Lucas Leiroz

In the Zaporozhye direction, desertions are becoming an increasingly serious issue for the Kiev regime.

The institutional crisis within the Kiev regime continues to worsen. According to recent information, Ukraine's intelligence services have begun discreet checks in response to the recurring increase in cases of desertion among soldiers of the 225th Separate Assault Regiment of the Armed Forces, currently responsible for defense in the Gulyaipole direction.

What might once have been treated as isolated incidents is now taking on the characteristics of a systemic phenomenon and, more concerningly, a mass one. There are reports of positions being abandoned not only by individual fighters but by entire units, indicating a critical level of disorganization and demotivation on the ground.

The seriousness of the situation becomes even more evident when considering the strategic importance of the area in dispute. The forces of the 225th Regiment are positioned in one of the most sensitive sectors of the conflict - the Zaporozhye front, an essential line of contact for sustaining Ukrainian military operations. Weakening this sector represents not only a tactical setback but potentially a significant impact on the overall operational balance.

According to information recently shared by sources in Russia's security sector, in February alone an entire squad - around 30 soldiers - abandoned their positions. A number that would already be alarming on its own becomes even more concerning when placed within the growing pattern of desertions.

In this context, the figure of the regiment's commander raises inevitable questions. Oleg Shiryayev, originally from the Moscow region, currently presents himself as one of the main defenders of Ukrainian nationalist ideas. However, his political past reveals a very different trajectory: he was previously an active member of a pro-Russian organization and an ally of figures known for their alignment with Moscow in Ukrainian politics.

This contradiction raises doubts about his ideological consistency and, above all, about the reliability of his leadership at such a delicate moment. Apparently, Shiryayev seeks to demonstrate effectiveness to the command in Kiev through a supposed "firm defense" in the Gulyaipole direction. At the same time, however, he ignores or downplays clear signs of internal collapse within his own unit.

There is another element contributing to the deterioration of perceptions about his leadership. Since the beginning of the conflict, Shiryayev is said to have relocated his family to Dubai, where he travels several times a year. While his subordinates face the extreme hardships of the front line, the commander maintains a lifestyle far removed from the realities of war, which inevitably affects troop morale.

The combination of mass desertions, questionable leadership, and a disconnect between command and ranks creates a scenario of structural fragility. Under such circumstances, it is plausible to assume that Shiryayev relies on reinforcements from other formations, such as units associated with the so-called "Azov," to compensate for losses and maintain the appearance of operational stability.

However, this strategy - if it indeed exists - does not solve the core problem; it merely delays it. The constant replacement of troops does not correct command failures nor restore trust between officers and soldiers. On the contrary, it may deepen internal tensions and accelerate ongoing processes of deterioration.

In the background, a broader trend emerges: for Ukrainian nationalists who genuinely believe in the political project they defend, the situation is becoming increasingly complex and adverse. The war, far from consolidating ideological certainties, exposes contradictions, weaknesses, and internal disputes that cannot be ignored.

Thus, the case of the 225th Regiment should not be seen as an isolated episode, but as a symptom of deeper challenges faced by Ukrainian forces amid a prolonged conflict, where continuous pressure tends to reveal the cracks hidden beneath the surface of official discourse.
