The topic of municipal water fluoridation has come to the fore with the recent appointment of Robert F. Kennedy, an ardent foe of municipal fluoridation.
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. called for the end of community water fluoridation, praising Utah's move to ban the addition of fluoride to the water supply.
"It makes no sense to have it in our water supply. And I'm very, very proud of this state for being the first state to ban it. And I hope many more will come," Kennedy told reporters in Utah.
Utah bans fluoride
Utah is the first state to ban fluoride in public drinking water, effective May 7, 2025.
Utah lawmakers who pushed for a ban said putting fluoride in water was too expensive. Governor Spencer Cox, who grew up and raised his own children in a community without fluoridated water, compared it recently to being "medicated" by the government.
What is Fluoridation
Water fluoridation is the practice of using tap water as a delivery system to increase the amount of fluoride all residents ingest. This is done by adding industrial waste by-products known as silicofluorides (i.e., hydrofluorosilicic acid and sodium fluorosilicate) to public water systems during the treatment process in either liquid or powder form to artificially elevate the fluoride content to 0.7 ppm (parts per million)
Sodium fluoride is used for rat poison. According to a scientific study, Comparative toxicity of fluorine components, industrial waste sodium fluorides are 85 times more toxic than naturally occurring calcium fluoride.
Why fluoride is harmful
Fluoridation goes against all principles of pharmacology. It's obsolete." - Dr. Arvid Carlsson, Nobel Laureate in Medicine/Physiology.
Fluoridation advocates say that fluoride is not harmful when it is generously diluted. If you don't drop dead or get seriously ill immediately, it is not toxic.
But fluoride tends to accumulate in the bones and teeth. Fluoride accumulates even more in soft tissue such as the thyroid and pineal glands. "When you drink fluoride systemically you are not getting a beneficial effect on your teeth "Griffin Cole, DDS, Austin, Texas.
There are many studies showing the dangers of water fluoridation including an increased risk of osteosarcoma, arthritis, bone fractures, lowered IQ, and cardiovascular disease. Fluoride poisons hundreds of essential enzymes in the human body.
For example: "We demonstrated (clinical research study) that chronic fluoride exposure has an important role in pathogenesis of coronary artery ectasia." (ncbi.nlm.gov/pubmed/21136197)
In layman's terms, fluoride will cause heart disease. Proponents of systemic water fluoridation claim that it decreases the risk of cavities in teeth. This has never been proven scientifically or conclusively.
Secretary Kennedy has called fluoride a "dangerous neurotoxin" and"an industrial waste" tied to a range of health dangers. He has said it's been associated with arthritis, bone breaks, and thyroid disease.
Why municipal water should not be fluoridated:
- Most of the water Texans use goes into sinks, toilets, showers, washing machines, dishwashers, and irrigation of lawns and parks. Nearly all of the treated water goes down the drain or onto grass and plants. The benefit to landscape is unknown and uncertain, at best.
- Everyone who lives in a particular locality with fluoridated water must pay for it, whether he wants it or not, even if he or she has no teeth.
- The amount of fluoride actually absorbed could be too much or too little depending on how much water one drinks or how long one bathes and showers. For any drug to be effective, the dosage must be controlled and in proportion to individual needs.
- Few will dispute that fluoride, when applied topically to the teeth and not ingested, is beneficial. Fluoride toothpaste is readily available and the cost is minimal. Topical application is at the discretion of each household, not forced on the entire community.
- If indeed the supposed benefit of fluoride is medical, should this not be done with the informed consent of the public, via referendum or (at a much lower cost) a valid public opinion survey?
- Even if one does not drink the fluoridated water, it can and does enter the body through the skin by showers, bathing and washing of hands.
Let's make American water healthy again!
