Note that I do not assign this task to Western governments. Governments, in the best of times, are an annoyance; in anything but the best of times, governments are oppressive and dangerous.

The titular question appropriately arose as our spirits rose during a sumptuous Easter dinner celebrating the triumph of life over death and love over hate. My granddaughter Sophie and I - she, three weeks shy of her eighteenth birthday - discovered that we both love sad songs and wondered why.

The turning of mothers against their own babies was won on devilish euphemisms for murder, but now it seems, the central pretense of "my body, my choice" is being dropped.
